Uber has a very strong presence throughout Charleston. About the neighborhood: Darius Rucker, lead singer of the band Hootie and the Blowfish, and Stephen Colbert grew up in this Charleston neighborhood! The West Ashley neighborhood in Charleston is noted as the birthplace of the city because English colonists established the first permanent settlement in the Carolina colony there in 1670. Local Native Americans (the Kiawah Indians) led colonists from the ship Carolina to a suitable settling ground. This 663-acre settlement area along the banks of the Ashley River, in the West Ashley neighborhood, is now a state historic site known as Charles Towne Landing, which features gardens and a reproduction 17th century sailboat among other historical and educational amenities.
